Pune: PMC to Construct Six New Solid Waste Management Plants to Tackle Garbage Surge

Pune: The city is grappling with a significant waste management challenge as per the recent Environment Status Report (ESR) for 2022-23. The report reveals that a staggering 2,100 to 2,200 metric tonnes of garbage are being generated in the city each day. To address this mounting waste crisis, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set forth plans to construct six additional solid waste management plants, each with a capacity of handling 750 metric tonnes of garbage per day.

Among the total waste generated, approximately 900 to 1,000 metric tonnes constitute wet garbage, while the remaining 1,100 to 1,200 metric tonnes fall under the category of dry garbage. With such numbers, the city’s existing waste management infrastructure is under immense strain, necessitating the swift implementation of sustainable waste management solutions.

The PMC’s ambitious plan to establish six new solid waste management plants aims to significantly boost the city’s waste processing capabilities. These plants will play a crucial role in efficiently segregating and managing both wet and dry waste, minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring a cleaner and healthier living environment for the residents.
