Pune News

PUNE: This year, the noise generated by dhol tasha troupes and acoustic walls have violated the noise pollution norms during the Ganesh immersion procession. A sound level of 101.3 decibel was recorded during the immersion procession on Laxmi Road. At 8 pm, a sound level of 129 decibel was recorded at Khandujibaba Chowk.

The Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities of the COEP Technological University measured the noise levels during the Ganesh immersion procession. This was the 23rd year of the initiative. The initiative was planned by Jaywant Nandode and Ishita Humnabadkar under the guidance of Dr Mahesh Shindikar. The notings were made by Suyog Lokhande, Indrajit Deshmukh, Parth Dhote, Randigvijay Jadhav, Atharva Dange, Aditya Sanjeevi, Anand Panjakar, Tejas Joshi, Shardul Lokapure, Shitij Rajput. The notings were analysed by Ira Kulkarni, Satvika Udayakumar, Samriddhi Tagde, Gayatri Thakar, Padmesh Kulkarni, Nagesh Pawar.
As per the norms of CPCB, the noise level should be 55 decibel in residential areas during the day, 75 decibel in industrial areas, 45 decibels in residential areas at night and 70 decibel in industrial areas.

The statistics reveal that the norms have been violated by Ganesh mandals, dhol tasha troupes and acoustic walls during the immersion procession. Last year, a noise level of 105 decibel had been recorded on Laxmi Road during the immersion procession. This year, there was a slight reduction but the recorded level is considered dangerous for health.
