Pune: Kalyani Nagar Residents Petition for Safer and Quieter Environments near Schools and Hospitals

In a concerted effort to enhance the quality of life for residents and foster safer educational and healthcare environments, concerned citizens of Kalyani Nagar, supported by Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar (TSKN), have approached the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) authorities to take immediate action on several critical community issues. Their requests center around the reduction of noise pollution and a reconsideration of the proximity of pubs and bars to schools and hospitals, gaining significant traction among the community.

A primary concern spotlighted in the petition is the disruptive impact of noise pollution in the locality. Excessive honking, particularly in designated silence zones, has been identified as a source of stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances among residents. To address this issue, TSKN advocates for stricter enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act Amendment of 2019, emphasizing the importance of maintaining silence in specified zones.

The petition also underscores the influence of pubs and bars on young minds. Safety concerns have arisen due to the diverse clientele these establishments attract, which may include intoxicated or unruly individuals. Additionally, the increased vehicular traffic generated by these venues leads to congestion, impeding the swift movement of emergency vehicles. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can result in health issues, including heightened stress levels, an increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure. Hospitals require a peaceful environment for patient recovery, making noise pollution detrimental to their well-being.

Monica Sharma, an activist of TSKN, remarked, “Having a pub near our school is like having a constant party next door. The noise levels are disruptive, making it difficult for students to concentrate. It’s frustrating to witness the impact on their education, and it’s simply not fair to compromise their learning environment in this way. We need to prioritize their academic success and create a peaceful atmosphere for them to thrive.”

Police Inspector Shailesh Sankhe, Traffic In-Charge, stated, “We try to control traffic congestion and adhere to the P1/P2 parking scheme, and we also remove wrongly parked vehicles. There are a few school buses parked on the side of the road, but we have talked to the school to call a meeting with the bus drivers, asking them to park in their allotted space.”

Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar and concerned citizens have requested the installation of appropriate “no honking” and “silence zone” signage boards in schools and hospitals, along with stricter enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act Amendment of 2019 to discourage unnecessary honking. By addressing these issues and drawing attention to their impact, the community aims to initiate positive change in Kalyani Nagar.
