Pune Gears Up for 14 Smart City Projects as PMC Takes the Helm

In a significant development, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to receive the reins of 14 Smart City projects by the end of January, as announced by civic chief Vikram Kumar on Tuesday. The handover is part of the dissolution of the smart city development corporation, and PMC is prepared to manage and operate various projects, primarily centered around the garden department.

Vikram Kumar stated, “The smart city development corporation will soon be dissolved. So, the projects, most of which are related to the garden department, will be taken over by the PMC. The civic administration will deploy a dedicated staff for operating these projects.” Additionally, the administration is actively exploring avenues to generate revenue from these projects.

Among the notable projects set to be handed over is the Command and Control Centre at Sinhagad Road, which will be jointly operated by the PMC and Pune police. This center will play a crucial role in monitoring and data collection. The administration will also assume control of 163 variable message display boards, strategically utilized for commercial purposes.

PMC’s operational responsibilities will extend to the adaptive traffic management system (ATMS). Vikram Kumar mentioned that decisions regarding the ATMS’s future expansion would be made in due course, emphasizing its significance in enhancing traffic signal efficiency and road safety.

The ATMS incorporates advanced features, including vehicle detector sensors at signals to gauge traffic volume at intersections. Real-time data from these sensors will be transmitted to the command and control center, enabling dynamic adjustments to signal durations based on traffic conditions.

“The PMC will also operate the adaptive traffic management system (ATMS). The decision of its future expansion will be taken in due course of time,” Kumar said.

The civic body anticipates the need for approximately Rs 58 crore to complete pending projects of the smart city development corporation and plans to seek funding from the state government to ensure successful implementation.
