Property Tax Recovery Woes: Pune’s Unrecovered Amount Exceeds Rs 8,500 Crore

Pune, August 22nd, 2023: Despite implementing a series of initiatives aimed at prompt property tax recovery, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) still faces a daunting task of recuperating approximately Rs 8,500 Crore in outstanding property tax from its citizens. While the civic body recently took stringent actions against around 1,400 properties by sealing them due to non-payment, only around Rs 100 Crore in dues were successfully recovered during that period.

However, despite these efforts, a significant portion of property owners remains in arrears. An alarming 41% of citizens who hold property within PMC’s jurisdiction missed the August 2nd deadline for property tax payment. Out of a total of approximately 12 lakh property owners obligated to make payments, over 5 lakh are yet to fulfill their tax obligations.

The PMC introduced the ‘Lucky Draw’ initiative, enticing those who paid their taxes within the stipulated timeframe with attractive prizes such as cars, electric scooters, laptops, and mobile phones. In addition to these incentives, the civic body also offers concessions to property owners who meet the payment deadline.
