PMPML’s E-Bus Dilemma: Delayed Deployment and Passenger Discontent

In a city where public transportation plays a pivotal role in commuting, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) finds itself grappling with a pressing issue – the delayed deployment of 177 E-buses, much to the detriment of passengers.

A Long Wait for Modernization

Two and a half years have passed since these E-buses were added to the PMPML fleet, yet they remain idle, awaiting deployment. Despite the increasing demand for efficient and eco-friendly transportation options, the delay persists, exacerbating the challenges faced by both the PMPML and its passengers.

Dwindling Fleet, Growing Woes

The situation is further compounded by the dwindling number of buses in the PMPML fleet. With 266 buses set to be retired due to their 12-year service tenure, the strain on existing vehicles has intensified. Compounding this issue is the alarming fact that around 327 buses are still operating without permits, leading to frequent breakdowns and disruptions in service.

Passenger Plight: A Daily Struggle

For passengers relying on PMPML services, the repercussions of these delays are acutely felt. With approximately 50 buses breaking down daily, commuters are left stranded in the scorching sun, compelled to seek alternative means of transportation, often at a higher cost and significant inconvenience.

Contractual Obligations and Accountability

The situation begs the question: why hasn’t the PMPML administration taken decisive action against the negligent contractor responsible for the delayed deployment of E-buses? Despite contractual agreements and the imposition of potential fines for non-compliance, the contractor has yet to face substantial consequences for their inaction, leaving passengers frustrated and disillusioned.

A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Challenges

Despite these challenges, plans for modernization persist, with 650 additional E-buses slated to gradually join the PMPML network. Five depots across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad stand ready to accommodate these electric vehicles, offering a glimmer of hope for improved public transportation in the region.

Urgent Call for Action

As passengers continue to bear the brunt of service disruptions and delays, there is an urgent need for the PMPML administration to hold accountable those responsible for the delayed deployment of E-buses. Only through proactive measures and decisive action can the PMPML fulfill its mandate of providing reliable, efficient, and sustainable public transportation for the residents of Pune.
