PMC Takes Decisive Action: Demolishes Unauthorized Constructions in Sutarwadi, Clears 3 Lakh Sq Ft Area

In a significant move, the building construction department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took strict action against unauthorized constructions, including showrooms and furniture malls, on the Mumbai Pune highway in Pashan, Sutarwadi. Approximately 3 lakh square feet of construction was demolished on Friday, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and address concerns raised by the Defense Department’s restricted area, home to the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).

Earlier attempts to remove these encroachments faced legal hurdles when shopkeepers obtained a stay order from the High Court in May. However, on February 23, the court lifted the stay order, allowing PMC to resume its efforts in clearing the unauthorized constructions.

The recent action targeted 20 shops, making way for the demolition of about 3 lakh square feet of construction. The affected area falls within the restricted zone of HEMRL, prompting complaints about traffic congestion on the highway. HEMRL had raised concerns about the unauthorized structures affecting its operations.

The PMC used a cutter machine, two JCBs, a gas cutter, a breaker, and engaged 15 workers and policemen to execute the operation. Senior Police Inspector of Hinjewadi Police Station and other staff were present during the demolition. The operation was conducted under the guidance of Superintendent Rajesh Bankar, with the participation of Executive Engineer Bipin Shinde, Deputy Engineer Sunil Kadam, and Branch Engineer Rahul Rasale, along with Sameer Gadai.

Further actions are anticipated in the coming week, targeting shops on the opposite side of the highway. The PMC’s commitment to addressing unauthorized constructions near HEMRL is part of an ongoing effort to enhance safety, alleviate traffic concerns, and comply with Defense Department regulations.
