Pune Residents Rally Against Menace of Illegal Hoardings, Threaten NOTA in Upcoming Elections

Pune, known for its vibrant culture and thriving community, is grappling with a persistent issue – the proliferation of illegal hoardings. Sidewalks, streets, trees, and public areas have become the canvas for these unauthorized structures, creating visual clutter and posing dangers to both vehicles and pedestrians. Frustrated citizens are now taking a stand, vowing to push the None of the Above (NOTA) option in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as a sign of protest against the inaction of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

An activist, highlighting the role of political leaders in the installation of 50–60% of these illegal hoardings, emphasized the urgent need for stringent legal procedures and fines. These actions, he believes, tarnish the city’s image and demand immediate resolution. The activist expressed his intention to vote NOTA in the next Lok Sabha elections, citing the persistent issue caused primarily by political parties.

With the surge in illegal hoardings, residents are increasingly concerned about the blatant disregard for safety regulations. A resident from MG Road emphasized the urgency for PMC intervention, urging swift removal of these unauthorized structures and advocating for harsh penalties to deter future offenses.

An RTI activist highlighted the life-threatening nature of the situation, especially with the approaching monsoon season. The city’s residents face heightened risks due to these illegal hoardings, and urgent action is imperative to ensure public safety.

Another resident, addressing the difficulties pedestrians encounter, called for stronger laws and permission requirements. The inconvenience caused by hoardings on sidewalks, according to the resident, necessitates a prohibition on such structures without proper authorization.

A senior PMC official assured that the issue of illegal hoardings is consistently addressed by the party. Users are encouraged to tag the PMC in social media posts or send direct WhatsApp messages with pictures for prompt action.
