PMC Launches Tetanus Vaccination Drive for Students: A First for Civic Schools

Pune: In a groundbreaking move, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced a tetanus vaccination drive for students in Std V, VI, IX, and X at civic schools. This marks the first such initiative by the municipal corporation, aiming to enhance immunization efforts for older students beyond the age covered by the Centre’s universal immunization program.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Chief Immunization Officer at PMC, highlighted the significance of extending tetanus vaccination to older students, stating, “While the DPT booster and pentavalent vaccines provided under the Centre’s universal immunization program include components of the tetanus vaccine for children up to the age of five, the immunogenicity diminishes as they grow older. It becomes crucial to vaccinate children above the age of five to ensure continued protection against tetanus.”

The vaccination drive, an integral part of PMC’s public health initiative, aims to immunize approximately 13,000 eligible students. Civic officials emphasize the importance of proactive measures to prevent tetanus, a bacterial infection that can have severe health consequences if left untreated.

The PMC’s move aligns with global health recommendations, underlining the importance of maintaining immunity throughout a child’s school years. Tetanus, caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, can enter the body through wounds or cuts, making preventive measures essential.

Parents and guardians of eligible students are encouraged to cooperate with PMC officials and ensure their children receive the tetanus vaccination. PMC authorities are actively working to streamline the vaccination process and address any concerns or queries from the community.
