Patriotism in Practice: 54th Batch Commissioning Marks AFMC’s Commitment to Military Nursing Service

The College of Nursing at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune witnessed a momentous occasion on February 22, 2024, as the Commissioning Ceremony of the 54th Batch of Nursing Graduates took place at the Capt Devashish Sharma Kirti Chakra Parade Ground, AFMC. The ceremony marked the culmination of four years of intensive training, transforming these nursing cadets into professionals with military ethos.

Lieutenant General Narendra Kotwal, AVSM, SM, VSM, the Director & Commandant of AFMC, presided over the ceremony as the Reviewing Officer and Chief Guest. The event commenced with a grand parade review led by the General Officer along with the parade commander. Subsequently, Lt Gen Kotwal, along with Maj Gen D Vivekanand, SM, Dean & Deputy Comdt of AFMC, and Brig S Gita, the Principal College of Nursing, officiated the commissioning of the graduates. The oath of affirmation was administered by the Principal, College of Nursing AFMC.

The parade, meticulously organized and executed, showcased the grace and poise of the newly commissioned Lieutenants. Esteemed guests, including Heads of Departments of AFMC, dignitaries from the civil sector, parents, teachers, officers, and nursing officers of Pune Garrison, were present to witness this significant milestone in the lives of the graduates.

The Chief Guest, Lt Gen Kotwal, presented prizes to the meritorious graduates, acknowledging their outstanding achievements in academics and all-round performance. Lt Ragnee Kumari received the prestigious Lt Gen KS Master Memorial Silver Medal for securing the first position in the final year Basic BSc Nursing University examination. Lt Karnabi Shankar was honored with the Gen Cariappa Rolling Trophy for being the Best All Round Nursing Student, and Lt Simranjeet Kaur received the Silver Jubilee Rolling Trophy for being adjudged as the Best Bedside Nurse in the batch.

Addressing the newly commissioned Nursing Officers, Lt Gen Kotwal highlighted their vital role in healthcare teams and urged them to be committed and render selfless service to their clientele in various AFMS hospitals. He extended congratulations and best wishes for their future endeavors.

In his remarks, Lt Gen Kotwal also commended the faculty of the College of Nursing for their unwavering dedication and proficiency in mentoring the nursing trainees into skilled professionals and compassionate individuals. He emphasized the role of these officers in serving the nation with honor and distinction.

The Commissioning Ceremony of the 54th Batch at the College of Nursing, AFMC Pune, not only celebrated the achievements of the graduates but also reinforced the institution’s commitment to excellence in nursing education and military service.
