Pune, September 9th, 2023: A minor accident near Lonavala sent ripples of congestion through the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on a Saturday evening, leaving many vehicles heading towards Pune stranded for an extended period. Reports from local sources indicated that the traffic had come to a standstill, with a queue of vehicles extending up to 10 kilometers along the expressway in the direction of Pune.
According to police officials, the incident unfolded near the Khandala Ghat at approximately 6 am, resulting in minor injuries to one person. However, the aftermath of this accident triggered substantial traffic jams as rescue teams worked diligently to clear the roadway. The situation was compounded by the fact that Saturday had witnessed significant rainfall, and Sunday marked a weekly off for many, prompting numerous individuals to embark on trips to Lonavala and its surrounding areas, seeking solace in the lap of nature alongside their family and friends. With a notable portion of tourists opting for private vehicles, the influx of cars on the expressway surged, inevitably leading to severe traffic congestion.
Authorities assured that the vehicle involved in the accident had been successfully removed from the road, and the expressway was reopened for the flow of traffic. However, the temporary closure of the road had already caused a significant slowdown in vehicular movement, particularly in the direction of Pune.
