In a concerning incident, a 30-year-old resident of Wagholi, Pune, has been conned out of 22 lakh rupees in an online relationship scam. The case has been reported to the Lonikand Police Station, and the alleged culprits are now under investigation.
The accused individuals, identified as Gayathri and Jai Bhagwan Rokade, both from Sangamner in the Ahmednagar district, are currently facing charges for their involvement in the fraudulent scheme. The victim, whose identity is being protected, decided to report the incident to the authorities at Lonikand Police Station.
The sequence of events began when the victim initiated contact with Gayathri through social media. What seemed like casual conversations took a serious turn when the young woman proposed marriage, marking the onset of the scam. She disclosed a series of fabricated financial difficulties, claiming to be burdened with family problems and medical emergencies involving her relatives.
Exploiting the victim’s empathy and trust, the accused orchestrated an elaborate scheme to extort a substantial sum of 22 lakh rupees from him through repeated online transactions. As the financial pressure on the victim escalated, he pleaded with Gayathri to return a portion of the misappropriated funds. However, his pleas were met with a sudden and complete cutoff—the young woman’s mobile number became inaccessible, leaving the victim in shock.
Upon realizing the extent of the deception, the victim wasted no time and filed a formal complaint with the Lonikand Police Station. This marked the beginning of a thorough investigation into the alleged online fraud.
