Deadline Set: PMC’s Action Plan to Tackle Potholes in Pune

Pune, 3rd August 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a firm ultimatum during a recent meeting, demanding the swift completion of pothole-filling work across the city by August 9. Junior engineers from the Road Department were explicitly warned that failure to meet the deadline would result in consequences for them. Special attention will be given to minor roads that connect with the major 15 roads, covering a total of 92 kilometers, which experience the highest traffic volume.

The meeting, presided over by Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne, aimed to review the progress of road repairs in the city. The heavy rainfall in July has caused the emergence of potholes throughout the city’s roads, necessitating immediate action.

To address the issue, the PMC is actively working on filling the potholes using Hotmix, Coldmix, and Murum. However, the ongoing rains are posing a challenge, requiring expedited efforts. Unfortunately, the Hotmix plant at Yerwada, owned by the Municipal Corporation, is currently closed, further complicating the pothole-filling process.

During the meeting, Additional Commissioner Dhakne directed the Executive Engineers to prioritize filling potholes at intersections where main roads meet connecting roads within their respective jurisdictions. Additionally, a list of 15 crucial roads in the city, experiencing heavy traffic, was compiled. The repair work on these roads must be completed by August 9 to alleviate traffic congestion caused by potholes. The meeting emphasized that junior engineers responsible for these roads would face consequences if potholes persist after the deadline.

Vikas Dhakne, Additional Commissioner of PMC, stated, “Today, the pothole-filling progress in the city was reviewed, and the responsibility for each road has been assigned to the respective Junior Engineer. If potholes are found on the roads after August 9, action will be taken against the concerned junior engineer.”

Hotmix Plant Closure Unfortunately, the Municipal Corporation’s Hotmix plant experienced a bearing failure, leading to a delayed reopening until Thursday night due to ongoing repair work. Consequently, no progress could be made in pothole-filling during the day. As a temporary measure, pits are being filled by sourcing materials from the contractor.
