Azad Hind Express: Potential Alterations to Address Prolonged Delays

The Pune-Howrah Azad Hind Express, a crucial rail connection between the two cities, might soon see changes in its operational schedule. The train, managed by the Pune rail division, has been grappling with consistent delays for almost a year. As a result, discussions are underway at the Railway Board level to explore options for addressing these delays. This includes the possibility of reducing the train’s operating frequency to six days a week, increasing the number of train rakes, or replacing the existing ones.

A senior railway official revealed that a recent meeting at the Railway Board discussed various measures to tackle the recurring delays experienced by the Azad Hind Express and other trains bound for Howrah. The Railway Board is expected to make a decision soon, aiming to streamline the train’s schedule and curb ongoing delays.

Indu Dubey, the divisional railway manager (DRM) for Pune, confirmed that discussions have taken place with officials from other divisions where maintenance work has contributed to the train’s delays. The train currently operates seven days a week, departing from Pune at 6.35 pm and arriving in Howrah at 3.55 am on the third day. The return journey starts from Howrah at 10.10 pm and arrives in Pune at 7.35 am on the third day.

The primary reason for the train’s delays has been maintenance work in the Bilaspur division under the South East Central Railway. One recent example cited by rail officials indicated that the train from Pune, scheduled for departure on August 5, faced a delay and would leave at 11.15 am instead.

Several options are being considered to mitigate the delays, including operating the train for six days a week, augmenting the number of train rakes, or introducing new rakes altogether. However, commuters remain skeptical about these measures. Shantanu Sinha, a passenger who recently experienced a day-long delay, expressed confusion about how these changes would truly address the issue, suggesting that adjusting the train’s timing or route could be more effective solutions.

The complexity of managing a train that crosses multiple railway zones complicates the process of adjusting schedules. Additionally, railway timetables are typically finalized at a yearly timetable conference, making immediate adjustments challenging. Railway officials have previously explained that if additional rakes are allocated to the Azad Hind Express, the train’s timing could improve. They have already requested additional rakes, and one has recently been provided to them.

As discussions unfold at the Railway Board level, passengers and railway officials await decisions that could potentially streamline the Pune-Howrah Azad Hind Express’ operations, ensuring a more punctual and efficient service for travelers between the two cities.
