Baramati, 23rd June 2023: A distressing incident unfolded today at Bhoitewadi Zilla Parishad Primary School in Tardoli (T. Baramati) Gram Panchayat, as a teacher was discovered in an intoxicated state, passed out on a table. The incident came to light when a concerned citizen visited the school and captured a video of the teacher’s condition, leading to the establishment of an inquiry committee.
The teacher in question, Bharat Chavan, had exhibited misconduct within just 15 days of the academic year. Despite being given a chance to rectify his behavior following complaints last year, Chavan failed to make the necessary improvements. His actions demonstrated a sense of impunity, causing distress to the young students who looked up to him as their mentor.
During an unannounced visit to the school, Gram Panchayat member Santosh Chaudhary, accompanied by Satish Bhapkar, discovered Chavan unconscious in a chair, with his head resting on the table. Chavan eventually woke up after being called multiple times by Chaudhary.
To their shock, Chaudhary realized that Chavan’s unconsciousness was a result of excessive alcohol consumption. He recorded a video of the incident, capturing Chavan’s incoherent mumbling and his struggles to walk, while pretending to be unwell.
It has been reported that the students had endured such behavior from Chavan over the past year. This incident has sparked widespread discussions in Baramati, shedding light on the presence of similar teachers in primary and secondary schools, and prompting calls for strict action against such individuals. Parents are expressing their concerns and emphasizing the need for vigilant individuals like Santosh Chaudhary, who prioritize the well-being of the students. Even qualified teachers are disheartened by this incident.
Chaudhary voiced his concerns, stating, “Underprivileged children study in this school with hopes of receiving a quality education. We have repeatedly requested Chavan to improve his conduct. Today, we found evidence of his drunken state. We intended to take him for a medical examination, but he left. The education department must address this matter seriously and provide us with competent teachers.”
Block Education Officer Sampat Gawde confirmed the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate the teacher’s behavior. The committee is expected to release its report tomorrow, and a medical examination will be conducted as part of the investigation. A notice has been issued to the school’s Principal, and both the Block Development Officer and Zilla Parishad have been informed about the incident.
