Pune, 24th June 2023: The Pune Rural Police has been tirelessly investigating the murder case of Darshana Pawar, the third-ranked candidate in the MPSC examination in Maharashtra state. As the investigation progressed, it became clear that the accused, Rahul Handore, had meticulously planned his escape and made significant efforts to evade the authorities after committing the heinous crime.
Rahul Handore and Darshana Pawar had known each other since childhood, as his house was located near her maternal uncle’s residence. Handore had proposed marriage to Pawar, but his proposal was declined. He was also preparing for the MPSC while working with a food delivery company.
The Accused’s Travels: Pune-Sangli-Goa-Chandigarh-Howrah
According to the police, Rahul Handore took extensive measures not only to escape but also to mislead them. Immediately after Darshana’s body was discovered on June 18, Handore swiftly left Pune and embarked on a train journey. His first destination was Sangli, followed by a visit to Goa. However, Goa was not his final stop. Handore proceeded to Chandigarh and then made his way to Howrah in West Bengal.
Misleading Tactics Employed by the Accused
At first glance, Handore’s journey might appear adventurous, but it was far from that. His primary motive was to deceive the police. Upon reaching Mumbai from Howrah, he turned off his mobile phone throughout the train journey.
Multiple Contacts with Family and Friends
During this period, the accused, Rahul Handore, managed to make phone calls by borrowing other passengers’ phones. He contacted his family and friends on five separate occasions. Handore would request assistance from fellow passengers to make a call to his family. Once Handore’s family became aware of his activities, they promptly informed the police, providing them with crucial information. The fellow passengers then alerted Handore about the police involvement and even provided him with a phone to contact his family.
Evading Capture and Changing Locations
Handore skillfully managed to avoid detection during these interactions and actively attempted to evade police tracking. He relied on the generosity of strangers for food during his journey. His plan was to mislead the authorities by assuming that investigators would trace his whereabouts based on his phone calls. However, his strategy failed since he used phones belonging to others and swiftly changed locations after each contact, making it challenging for the police to apprehend him.
Arrest and Investigation into Handore’s Possession of Weapons
Finally, the police succeeded in apprehending Rahul Handore after receiving information that he would be arriving at Andheri railway station in Mumbai. He was arrested while en route from Andheri to Pune.
In addition to Handore’s capture, authorities are conducting an investigation to determine if he had been carrying a cutter or blade during the trek he went on with Darshana Pawar before her tragic murder.
