Pune witnessed a significant uptick in rainfall on Friday, particularly in the catchment area of the Khadakwasla dam chain, encompassing Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar, and Khadakwasla reservoirs.
According to data provided by the irrigation department, this sustained rainfall led to a noteworthy boost in the overall water storage levels across these four vital dams. Over the course of the day, from 6 am to 5 pm, the combined rainfall accumulation in these dams reached 25 mm.
As of the latest available figures, the Khadakwasla dam is currently holding 0.90 TMC (45.72%) of its total water storage capacity. Similarly, Panshet reservoir stands at 10.58 TMC (99.41%), Varasgaon dam at 12.71 TMC (99.10%), and Temghar dam at 2.97 TMC (80.03%) of their respective water storage capacities.
In the morning, before the rainfall, the combined storage in these four dams was 27.15 TMC, representing 93.13% of their capacity. Throughout the day, authorities released 1,005 cusecs of water from these dams for drinking purposes, with an additional 1,005 cusecs released for agricultural use. Impressively, a total of 13 million cubic feet of water was collected in just 11 hours.
Furthermore, for power generation purposes, 600 cusecs of water were discharged from the Varasgaon dam, and an equal amount was released from the Panshet dam. These combined releases amounted to a significant 1,200 cusecs of water flowing directly into the Khadakwasla dam.
This boost in water levels comes as a welcome relief and could contribute positively to the region’s water supply situation. The authorities continue to monitor and manage the water resources effectively, ensuring that the needs of the local population are met, especially in the face of varying rainfall patterns.
