PCMC’s Traffic Relief Initiative: Subway Planned for Rakshak Chowk

In a bid to alleviate persistent traffic congestion issues on the BRTS route between Sangvi Phata to Ravet, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has unveiled plans for a new subway at Rakshak Society Chowk in Pimple Nilakh. The project aims to provide signal-free connectivity for straight traffic heading towards Pune, ultimately easing the flow and reducing traffic snarls in the area.

Makarand Nikam, City Engineer (Civil) at PCMC, stated, “The planned subway is designed to facilitate the movement of traffic towards Pune, making it signal-free. Construction is slated to commence in the next 3 to 4 months, addressing the traffic challenges in the vicinity.”

The Ravet-Kivale BRT route connects Sangvi and Aundh, originating from the Rajiv Gandhi Bridge over the Mula River. Constructed a decade ago, the PCMC added a main road, service road, and BRT corridor to enhance connectivity. Recent years witnessed further improvements, including the installation of a cycle path, footpaths, and tree planting initiatives to enhance the area’s aesthetics.

The strategic location of this route connects various key points, including the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway, Wakad, Hinjawadi, Y Junction, Sai Chowk, Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Pimpri, Pune-Mumbai, Pune-Nashik highways, and more. Additionally, it facilitates connections to Pradikaran, Kalewadi branch, Chinchwad, Bhosari MIDC, Dange Chowk Thergaon, Valhekarwadi road, Ravet, Punavale, Tathwade, Baner, and Balewadi areas.

The increasing number of IT workers commuting to Hinjawadi has led to a surge in traffic, causing frequent jams at Rakshak Society Chowk. To counter this issue, PCMC proposes the construction of a subway as a practical solution to alleviate traffic woes.
