IMD Forecasts Light Rain in Pune, Heavy Over Ghats

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert, predicting a partial increase in rainfall activity over the Konkan and adjoining ghats of Madhya Maharashtra in the next three days. This forecast comes as westerly winds from the Arabian Sea strengthen, leading to changes in weather patterns. While Pune is expected to experience light rainfall, the ghats are likely to witness heavy downpours.

The cause behind this shift in weather conditions is a deep depression intensifying over the northeast of the Bay of Bengal, just off the Bangladesh coast. The IMD has issued an orange and yellow alert for the region, indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall in the mentioned areas.

As per the IMD’s forecast, Konkan and Goa, along with the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, can expect fairly widespread to widespread rainfall in the next five days. Additionally, Marathwada will witness rainfall on August 2, while the Gujarat region will experience it on August 1, 4, and 5.

The forecast also highlights the expected weather conditions for specific regions. Madhya Maharashtra is likely to experience fairly widespread rains till August 4, whereas Konkan will witness widespread rains till August 7. Within Konkan, districts like Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg might witness heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places till August 5.

The ghat areas of Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara have been issued a yellow and orange alert, signaling the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next three days. However, Pune city itself is expected to receive only light rain during this period.

Despite the projected increase in rainfall for the next few days, experts suggest that August could witness a significant reduction in overall rainfall activity in the state. The IMD’s probabilistic forecast indicates that while rainfall during the second half of this year’s monsoon (August to September) is likely to be normal, August might see below-normal rain, falling in the lower end of the expected range.

As the monsoon season progresses, it is essential for residents and authorities in the affected areas to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall. Proper preparedness and timely response measures can help minimize potential risks and ensure the safety of the public.
