Honoring Heroes: Pune Establishes Dedicated Cell to Support Freedom Fighters and Soldiers

In a laudable move aimed at addressing the challenges faced by freedom fighters, families of martyrs, veterans, and current servicemen, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has taken a momentous step by establishing a dedicated cell. This initiative serves as a comprehensive framework to extend support to those who have selflessly served the nation and to their families residing within the municipality’s boundaries.

A Committee for Support

A committee comprising 11 members has been appointed to oversee the operations of this newly established cell. The committee is headed by Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate, while Mininath Dandavate, Deputy Commissioner of the Sports Department, will serve as the cell’s chairman.

Within the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, approximately 20 independence soldiers, 9 martyr families, and around 1500 ex and current servicemen call this region their home. Additionally, many active-duty soldiers have their families residing within the municipality.

Recognizing Diverse Challenges

Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh astutely recognized the need for a specialized cell to address the multifaceted challenges experienced by freedom fighters, martyrs’ families, and ex-servicemen. The 11-member committee has been entrusted with overseeing various responsibilities of this dedicated cell.

Core Functions of the Cell

The primary functions of this dedicated cell include:

  1. Accepting complaint applications at the municipal headquarters and 8 zonal office locations on a monthly basis.
  2. Swiftly reviewing and addressing these complaints, with a strong focus on effective problem-solving.
  3. Coordinating and planning committee meetings to explore potential solutions.
  4. Conducting quarterly reviews of pending cases to ensure efficient and timely resolution.

Commissioner Singh has further directed the Chief Accounts and Finance Officer and the Accounts Department to conduct monthly meetings with relevant department heads. These meetings aim to allocate provisions in the budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025 specifically designated for implementing various schemes to support freedom fighters, martyrs, and ex and current servicemen under a dedicated account head.

This newly established cell underscores the municipality’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of these national heroes and their families while addressing their unique needs and concerns.
