Setting the Stage: The Final Hill Demolition and Countdown to Navi Mumbai Airport’s Launch

As the construction of the Navi Mumbai International Airport progresses, significant developments indicate that commercial operations are on the horizon, with an expected launch in December 2024. The completion of the first terminal building’s exterior structure marks a crucial milestone in the airport’s development.

Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL) officials have expressed optimism about the project’s timeline, emphasizing that they are ahead of schedule on the airfield’s construction. The airfield, encompassing a runway, taxiway, apron, and other essential structures, is currently 60% complete, with the runway reaching 70% completion.

The remaining hurdle involves the demolition of a partially destroyed hill situated behind the terminal building. NMIAL officials anticipate that this hill will be leveled by mid-January, clearing the way for the commencement of the first commercial takeoff in December of the following year.

While NMIAL, with a 74% ownership stake, is the primary force behind the airport’s development, the project’s nodal authority, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) for Navi Mumbai, holds the remaining 25%. Collaborative efforts between MIAL and Cidco are underway to expedite the demolition process, with mid-January identified as the target completion date.

Despite earlier reports suggesting potential delays and a commercial launch in 2025, NMIAL officials remain confident in meeting the established timelines. The airport, designed to alleviate traffic at Mumbai’s sole international airport, is anticipated to handle a mix of domestic and international flights, reaching a peak capacity of 60 million passengers in the coming years.

With an initial capacity of 20 million passengers, Navi Mumbai Airport is expected to accommodate twelve million passengers in its inaugural year of operation. Plans are underway for inspections by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) starting from September, aiming for a seamless start in the winter schedule of 2024.
