Sea Link Odyssey: MMRDA’s Versova-Virar Project Sets Sail for Peer Review”

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has embarked on a significant step towards the realization of the Versova-Virar Sea Link project. The process to appoint a consultant for the peer review of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is now underway. This move comes as the project reaches a critical juncture, with the Pentacle-Cemosa joint venture currently conducting various surveys to finalize the draft and the final DPR.

The intricacies of the Versova-Virar Sea Link project have led MMRDA to seek the expertise of a consultant for a comprehensive review. The appointed consultant will play a vital role in evaluating the feasibility study, scrutinizing the DPR, and aiding in the preparation of bid documents. This multi-faceted review is crucial due to the complex nature of the project, which involves a 42.75-km elevated road with eight lanes connecting Versova to Virar.

The primary objective of the Versova-Virar Sea Link is to establish an efficient north-south corridor, offering swift transportation options for commuters in the northern suburbs of Mumbai and the broader Metropolitan Region. The sea link will commence at the Versova Connector, branching off from the ongoing Versova-Bandra Sea Link project, and traverse 42.75 km over the marine area until it reaches Virar along the Western Coast.

This ambitious project is set to introduce four vital connectors, seamlessly linking Charkop, Mira Bhayander, Vasai, and Virar. With an estimated cost of Rs 63,426 crore and the necessary cabinet approval, MMRDA is poised to bring this transformative vision to fruition.

The peer review process will delve into critical aspects such as the alignment’s suitability, mitigation of obstacles, environmental considerations, exploration of alternative options, and a meticulous examination of cost estimates. As the Versova-Virar Sea Link project advances, the peer review ensures that it aligns with the highest standards of feasibility, sustainability, and effectiveness.
