The cancellation of 200 weekly flights on 12 routes connecting Mumbai airport has triggered a substantial surge in airfares, reaching as high as 193%. This surge follows a government directive issued on February 14, mandating flight reductions to address persistent congestion, causing delays of up to 60 minutes. IndiGo, India’s largest carrier, has been particularly affected, canceling 110 flights on nine routes connecting Mumbai within the past week.
Routes from Mumbai to 12 destinations, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, among others, have witnessed a reduction in flight availability. The Mumbai airport, previously managing 6,417 flights per week, is now handling 6,217 flights per week.
Notably, the cancellations have impacted routes like Mumbai-Kannur, where the number of flights has halved to six services per week. This reduction in flight availability has resulted in a significant surge in airfares on affected routes, adversely affecting travelers.
