In a recent statement, Nadir Godrej, Managing Director of Godrej Industries, shared his perspective on the evolving landscape of Mumbai, emphasizing the transformative impact of the Atal Setu.
According to Godrej, the Atal Setu is expanding the area of Mumbai, turning it into a megalopolis akin to Boswash in the United States. This development, he notes, will integrate Pune and Mumbai, creating one vast megalopolis.
Godrej reflects on Mumbai’s identity as a cosmopolitan and financial city on India’s western coast. Over the years, Mumbai has witnessed significant growth in population, leading to a rise in high-rise structures. Despite the development of crucial infrastructure, such as the recently inaugurated Atal Setu and the forthcoming coastal road, the city grapples with challenges like escalating air pollution.
Acknowledging Mumbai’s historical openness to the world, Godrej draws parallels with global cities like New York and emphasizes Mumbai’s financial significance. However, he also raises concerns about the city’s increasing population density and the environmental repercussions, urging prompt government intervention to address air pollution.
In the early years, the Godrej Group comprised two companies—Godrej & Boyce and Godrej Soaps. Godrej & Boyce initially focused on steel products, gradually diversifying into safes, office furniture, refrigerators, typewriters, computers, and even aerospace. On the other hand, Godrej Soaps, under Godrej’s father, witnessed substantial growth and diversification.
Reflecting on the Group’s growth, Godrej highlights the significant expansion from a turnover of Rs 2 crore for Godrej Soaps in the early days to Godrej Consumer Products achieving a turnover exceeding Rs 10,000 crore today. He reminisces about joining the animal feed business in 1976 and contributing to the development of Godrej Agrovet’s new businesses, including the oil palm sector.
While narrating the growth trajectory, Godrej recalls the crisis the Group faced in the late 1980s during the establishment of an oleochemical plant in Valia. Originally intended for natural alpha olefins, the plant ultimately shifted focus to fatty alcohol production.
