IMD’s Rainfall Outlook: Mumbai to Receive Modest Showers in the Next Five Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a continuation of the prevailing lull in monsoon showers for Mumbai and its neighboring districts, including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. According to the IMD’s weather bulletin for the upcoming five days, no severe weather warnings have been issued for Mumbai and the surrounding areas until August 11.

IMD’s provided data indicated that, between Sunday and Monday morning, the Santacruz observatory received 3 mm of rain, while the Colaba observatory recorded a mere 0.2 mm of rainfall.

Throughout Monday, up until 6.30 pm, the automatic weather system operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported 0.74 mm of rain in the eastern suburbs, followed by 0.23 mm in the island city division, and 0.07 mm in the western suburbs.

Meteorologists at the IMD attribute the decrease in the intensity of rainfall in the coming days to the movement of a low-pressure system towards Uttar Pradesh, as well as the absence of strong westerly winds blowing across Mumbai.

Despite the subdued rainfall, the water levels in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai have reached 81% of their total capacity as of Monday morning. Comparatively, on the same day last year, the lake levels were at 91%, while in 2021, the water stock stood at 80%.
