IMD Weather Update: Anticipated Heavy Rainfall in Several States for the Upcoming Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has unveiled a weather forecast predicting notable rainfall patterns across various regions of the country. In its press release on Sunday, the IMD highlighted specific areas where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to occur over the next 4-5 days.

The focus of the prediction lies on Uttarakhand, northern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Northeast India. These regions are expected to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during the mentioned time frame.

However, central and Peninsular India can anticipate relatively subdued rainfall activity during the same period, according to the IMD’s statement.

The meteorological agency has observed a cyclonic circulation over southern Bihar in the lower levels of the atmosphere. Furthermore, it has pointed out that the Monsoon Trough, a significant weather feature, is positioned north of its usual location. This trend is likely to continue, with the Trough expected to remain northward or situated along the foothills of the Himalayas over the upcoming 3-4 days.

IMD’s Weather Forecast Breakdown:

Northwest India: Light to moderate scattered rainfall, with occasional isolated heavy rainfall, is projected for Uttarakhand from August 7 to 10. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh is forecasted to experience the same from August 7 to 9. Notably, isolated instances of very heavy rainfall could occur in Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh on August 8 and 9.

East India: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in this region, with isolated episodes of heavy rainfall expected over West Bengal & Sikkim on August 7 and 8. Bihar and Jharkhand may experience this pattern from August 7 to 9. Moreover, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Bihar could witness isolated cases of very heavy rainfall on August 7 and 8, respectively.

Northeast India: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, along with isolated occurrences of heavy to very heavy rainfall, is predicted for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur during the next five days. An exception to this is Meghalaya, where isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall are forecasted for August 7.

West & South India: This region can expect subdued rainfall activity over the course of the next five days.

  • West Bengal and Sikkim: Light to moderate rainfall, including isolated heavy rainfall, is anticipated until August 8.
  • Bihar and Jharkhand: These states are likely to encounter comparable weather conditions, with light to moderate rainfall and isolated heavy rainfall forecasted until August 9.
  • Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur: A range of light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, coupled with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall, is expected during the next five days.
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Bihar: Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely in these areas on specific dates.
  • Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalaya West Bengal & Sikkim, and Bihar: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in isolated pockets on August 7.
  • Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura: Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is projected for August 8.
  • Uttarakhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura: Similar weather conditions, including heavy to very heavy rainfall, are likely on August 10.
  • West & South India: Subdued rainfall activity is foreseen in these regions during the next five days.

Thunderstorm Forecast:

  • August 7: Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected in various regions, including Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
  • August 8: Similar thunderstorm conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
  • August 9: Isolated instances of thunderstorms with lightning are forecasted over east Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
  • August 10: Thunderstorms with lightning are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
