Driving Away Congestion: MMRDA Set to Complete Third Chheda Nagar Flyover, Easing Traffic Woes by May

In a bid to tackle the persistent issue of traffic congestion at Ghatkopar on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is making significant strides in completing the third Chheda Nagar flyover. This strategic initiative, part of the broader triple-flyover project, is poised to bring relief to commuters by alleviating traffic jams at the Chheda Nagar junction.

Key Points:

  1. Flyover Progress:
    • The third Chheda Nagar flyover, a pivotal element of the triple-flyover project, is slated for completion by May.
    • The overarching goal is to streamline traffic flow and mitigate congestion at the bustling Chheda Nagar junction.
  2. Project Components:
    • Completed flyovers include connectors between the existing north-south Chheda Nagar flyover and Amar Mahal flyover.
    • The second flyover spans Chheda Nagar Junction, linking the Indian Oil Corporation on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) to the Thane-bound lanes on EEH.
    • The upcoming third flyover will facilitate south-to-north traffic from Amar Mahal towards Vikhroli.
  3. Previous Traffic Challenges:
    • Prior to the triple-flyover project, Chheda Nagar junction had a one-way flyover directing traffic from Thane to Sion without a north-bound arm.
    • Traffic congestion ensued as vehicles on the north-bound carriageway queued at signals to turn right for GMLR, causing delays for traffic from GMLR to Mulund via EEH.
  4. Initiation and Progress:
    • Work on the triple-flyover project commenced in July 2018.
    • The completion of the first and second flyovers, after five and six years, respectively, has marked significant progress.
  5. Cost:
    • The estimated cost of the triple-flyover project stands at Rs58 crore.

MMRDA’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and addressing traffic challenges at Chheda Nagar junction reflects a dedicated effort to enhance the commuting experience for residents and commuters on Mumbai’s Eastern Express Highway. The imminent completion of the third flyover is anticipated to play a pivotal role in achieving this objective.
