Indian Cities Battling Cyber Threats: Kolkata and Mumbai Lead

Kolkata and Mumbai have emerged as the two Indian cities most severely impacted by cyber threats, according to a report released by a prominent multinational cybersecurity solutions provider. The report assesses cities based on the number of cyber threats detected during the second quarter (April-June) of the current year.

Data compiled by Quick Heal Technologies, headquartered in Pune, reveals that Kolkata leads the list of cities affected during this period, with a staggering 7.08 million cyber threats. Mumbai closely follows, with 7 million recorded threats.

Pune and New Delhi secured the third and fourth positions, respectively, with 5.69 million and 5.56 million cyber threats each. This ranking underscores the alarming surge in cybercriminal activities observed in these urban centers.

Other Indian cities featured in the report’s top 10 list include Bengaluru (4.86 million threats), Surat (4.16 million threats), Hyderabad (3.50 million threats), Ahmedabad (3.45 million threats), Chennai (2.36 million threats), and Gurgaon (2.01 million threats).

The comprehensive report, offering insights into the cyber threat landscape in India, is the result of extensive research and analysis, encompassing over one million daily cyber threats detected on laptops and PCs.

The cybersecurity landscape is evolving at a rapid pace, with cybercriminals demonstrating heightened levels of sophistication and adaptability. In the second quarter of 2023, researchers noted a substantial uptick in innovative techniques employed by these threat actors across various platforms and applications.

Of particular concern is the proliferation of hidden ads through cyber gaming apps, where icons are cunningly concealed to evade detection. These intrusive ads infiltrate unsuspecting apps, disrupting the user experience by displaying random advertisements from unfamiliar domains.

As the threat of cyberattacks continues to evolve, bolstering cybersecurity measures and public awareness remains critical to safeguarding individuals and organizations from digital threats.
