Qualcomm and Jio’s Game-Changer: Sub-$99 5G Smartphone Set to Transform India’s Mobile Landscape

In a significant move to revolutionize India’s mobile market, Qualcomm is collaborating with Reliance Jio to introduce an entry-level 5G smartphone priced below $99 by the end of this year. The US-based chipmaker is set to unleash a groundbreaking chipset designed to facilitate the affordable 5G device, aiming to encourage the migration of 2G users to the world of 5G-enabled smartphones.

Empowering the Transition from 2G to 5G in India

Qualcomm’s new chipset is poised to bridge the gap between 2G and 5G, providing a seamless transition for consumers seeking cost-effective smartphones. The initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to optimizing the evolution from 4G to 5G, ensuring frictionless integration for handset developers, telecom operators, and end consumers.

Strategic Collaboration with Reliance Jio and OEMs

Collaborating closely with India’s leading telecom operator, Reliance Jio, and original equipment makers (OEMs), Qualcomm aims to develop and launch the gigabit 5G smartphone. The device will support the 5G standalone architecture, aligning with Jio’s current offerings in the 5G space. The smartphone will be equipped with a dedicated low-cost customized processor, boasting SA-2Rx capability to achieve gigabit speeds on a 5G network.

India-Focused Innovation: Unveiling a Full 5G Experience

Chris Patrick, SVP and General Manager of Handsets at Qualcomm, highlighted that the new chipset is designed to deliver a complete 5G experience to Indian consumers seeking affordable smartphones. Inspired by the Indian market, the focus is on facilitating a smooth transition to 5G, making sure the products are optimized for handset developers, telcos, and end consumers.

Driving Global Connectivity with Affordable 5G

Qualcomm executives emphasize the potential global impact of a sub-$99 5G smartphone. Citing GSMA data, they project that such a device could bring 5G accessibility to as many as 2.8 billion people worldwide, including the vast Indian market. The move is expected to reshape the dynamics of the mobile industry, making advanced connectivity more accessible to a broader demographic.

Developer Engagement and Use Case Development

Savi Soin, President at Qualcomm India, emphasized the importance of strong partnerships and developer engagement. Collaborating with ecosystem partners, including Jio and OEMs, Qualcomm aims to introduce a successful 5G device in a new price tier. Soin highlighted the need for carrier incentives to ensure OEMs’ participation, particularly for the standalone product.
