Audi, the renowned German automaker, is gearing up to introduce a fresh global vehicle naming strategy aimed at providing clarity and differentiation between its internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and electric vehicles (EVs). Under this new system, Audi will assign odd-numbered badges to its combustion-engined vehicles and even-numbered badges to their electric counterparts.
This strategy will take effect with the launch of upcoming models, including the electric A6 e-tron, set to hit the market in 2024. The current A6 will transition to the A7 designation as part of this naming shift. Similarly, the forthcoming Q6 e-tron will serve as the electric alternative to the Q5, which will undergo a new generation with combustion drivetrains in 2024.
Audi’s technical chief, Oliver Hoffmann, explained that this naming approach will serve as a clear means of distinguishing between the two powertrain types, ensuring that customers can readily identify whether a vehicle is powered by electricity or conventional combustion.
The Fate of the e-tron Suffix
With this revamped naming system, there is speculation about the future of Audi’s iconic “e-tron” suffix, which has been a hallmark of its electrified vehicles since 2009. Hoffmann clarified, stating, “In the future, A6 will be clear as the battery-electric vehicle. It will be the A6 e-tron, like the Q6 e-tron, but if anyone says ‘this is the Q6,’ you know it is the battery-electric vehicle. You don’t have to use the e-tron badge, or ICE badge.”
While the e-tron badge will still be retained, it will be employed in a more subtle manner, similar to how Audi currently uses TDI and TFSI badges to denote diesel and petrol models. Hoffmann emphasized the importance of this clear naming structure in a market where various badges are used to signify different vehicle types.
Audi’s innovative approach to naming reflects the evolving landscape of the automotive industry as it transitions to electric mobility while maintaining a connection to its storied heritage.
