Purandar Airport Development

India’s aviation sector is undergoing significant expansion and development, with the government’s focus on building world-class infrastructure and improving air travel. The launch of 74 additional airports in the past nine years, bringing the total number of airports to 148, is a testament to the country’s commitment to enhancing connectivity. Several upcoming airports in India are set to further bolster the nation’s position on the global aviation map. Let’s take a closer look at five notable airports that will play a crucial role in improving air travel and connectivity in India.

  1. Noida International Airport – Jewar, Uttar Pradesh: The Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, is currently one of the largest airport projects in India. Developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, it will serve as the second airport in the Delhi-NCR region. The construction of the airport commenced in 2021, and the first phase is expected to be operational by 2024. With an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers, it will eventually expand to accommodate 60 million passengers.
  2. Navi Mumbai International Airport – Mumbai, Maharashtra: The Navi Mumbai International Airport is a significant project aimed at complementing the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, one of India’s busiest airports. The new airport will help alleviate the load on Mumbai Airport and will feature domestic, international, and cargo terminals. The first phase of the airport, spread across 1,000 hectares of land, is expected to be operational by 2025, with an estimated capacity to handle 25 million passengers annually.
  3. Bhogapuram International Airport – Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh: The Bhogapuram Airport, also known as the GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport, is a major upcoming airport in Andhra Pradesh. It is being developed by the GMR Group, known for its successful management of airports in Delhi and Hyderabad. The airport is a public-private partnership project with the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation and the state government. Upon completion in early 2025, the airport will have one terminal, a 3,800-meter runway, and a capacity to handle 6 million passengers in its initial phase.
  4. Purandar Airport – Pune, Maharashtra: Purandar Airport is an eagerly awaited international airport for Pune and the surrounding region. Currently, Pune Airport operates as a civil enclave within the Lohegaon facility, sharing the space with the Indian Air Force. The need for a dedicated international airport for Pune has been recognized, and plans for the Purandar Airport are underway. Although the project has faced delays due to site clearances and pending approvals, it will significantly enhance air connectivity for Pune and the neighboring areas.
  5. Shivamogga Airport – Shimoga, Karnataka: Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2023, the Shivamogga Airport in Karnataka is set to commence commercial operations in August 2023. It will be the first airport in Karnataka to be managed by the state government. The airport’s operations and maintenance will be overseen by the Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation. With these arrangements in place, the Shivamogga Airport will contribute to improved air connectivity and economic growth in the region.

These upcoming airports reflect India’s commitment to advancing its aviation infrastructure and expanding connectivity. With improved accessibility and enhanced travel options, these airports will play a vital role in driving economic development and promoting tourism across different regions of the country.
