WhatsApp Ends Support for Android 4.4 KitKat: What You Need to Know

WhatsApp users with older Android phones are in for an unwelcome surprise as the popular messaging app has ceased support for Android 4.4 KitKat. This means that if you own a device running this older Android version, you won’t be able to send or receive messages via WhatsApp.

Starting from now, WhatsApp will only work on Android phones running Android 5.0 or newer versions. So, users with Android 4.4 KitKat-based phones will need to upgrade to a more recent device to continue using WhatsApp for their daily messaging needs.

This change might affect a small number of users who are still using Android 4.4 KitKat, but it’s part of WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to keep its app compatible with the latest features and security updates. WhatsApp is regularly rolling out updates and improvements, and focusing on more recent Android versions allows them to offer a smoother and more secure experience for the majority of users.

On the iOS side of things, there are no changes in the support list for iPhones. WhatsApp will continue to work on phones with iOS 12 or later, ensuring that iPhone users can enjoy uninterrupted messaging services.

In addition to these platform changes, WhatsApp recently introduced a Passkey sign-in feature for Android users. This new sign-in method enhances security by allowing users to access their WhatsApp accounts using facial recognition or fingerprint, eliminating the need for OTP or passwords.

WhatsApp is also testing various features for both Android and iOS users, including the ability to reply to status updates with avatars. Furthermore, the app now enables the use of two WhatsApp accounts on a single device, making it convenient for those who wish to keep personal and work WhatsApp profiles separate.
