Microsoft Unveils DirectSR API: Empowering Game Developers with Super Resolution Integration

Microsoft has taken a significant step in enhancing the gaming experience for PC users with the introduction of the DirectSR API, aimed at simplifying the integration of super resolution AI-upscaling technologies from major vendors such as Nvidia, AMD, and Intel into PC games.

Unlocking Seamless Integration:

The newly launched DirectSR API serves as a breakthrough for game developers, acting as the “missing link” between games and super resolution technology, according to Joshua Tucker, Microsoft’s program manager. This API is expected to provide a smoother and more efficient experience that seamlessly scales across various hardware configurations.

Developers can look forward to exploring the capabilities of the DirectSR API through a preview version available in the Microsoft Agility Software Development Kit (SDK). A more detailed understanding of its functionality is anticipated during a dedicated session at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC) on March 21, where Microsoft, Nvidia, and AMD will be actively participating.

Common Method for Super Resolution:

The DirectSR API facilitates multi-vendor super resolution (SR) by offering a common set of inputs and outputs. This means that developers can now activate a variety of super resolution solutions, including Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel XeSS, using a single code path. This marks a departure from the traditional approach where developers had to create separate code for each upscaling technology.

By eliminating the need for specific coding for each vendor’s solution, the DirectSR API streamlines the game creation process and enhances compatibility with diverse hardware configurations. This move aligns with the broader industry trend of simplifying development processes and fostering interoperability.

Windows 11 and AI-Powered Upscaling:

The announcement of the DirectSR API comes in the wake of the discovery of an “Automatic Super Resolution” function in a Windows 11 beta release. Indications point to the inclusion of AI-powered upscaling features in the upcoming PC operating system. Instead of developing an in-house solution, Microsoft seems inclined to leverage existing technologies like Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR, and Intel’s XeSS through its DirectSR API.
