Apple is currently under legal scrutiny as it faces a lawsuit over allegations of unfairly restricting competition through its iCloud storage service. Some users claim that Apple is favoring its iCloud service for storing specific files from iPhones and iPads, limiting user choices for alternative storage solutions.
According to a recent report by Bloomberg Law, plaintiffs argue that certain crucial data, such as app information and device settings, can only be stored on Apple’s iCloud. This allegedly forces users into using iCloud instead of having the freedom to opt for other storage options.
The complaint filed in a California court highlights that Apple’s iCloud dominates the market, capturing approximately 70% of users. The lawsuit contends that Apple capitalizes on iCloud’s popularity by maintaining high prices, with little to no real competition allowing the company to sustain these elevated rates. While Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud storage, the lawsuit claims that most users find this insufficient for their needs, leading them to purchase supplemental iCloud storage plans.
The legal action seeks to represent a large group of users, including those who feel they were overcharged for iCloud plans. It is estimated that millions of people could potentially join the case.
Cloud storage allows users to save and access files remotely, offering convenience with internet access. However, the lawsuit argues that Apple’s limited free iCloud access to 5GB since its launch in 2011 creates inconvenience for users who prefer having all their data in one place.
The law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP is representing the main plaintiff, Julianna Felix Gamboa, and others who may join the lawsuit. Apple has yet to respond to the allegations.
