Gujarat Titans’ Matthew Wade to Miss Initial IPL Matches Due to Sheffield Shield Commitment

Gujarat Titans’ fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Matthew Wade in action during the initial matches of the IPL 2024 season, as the seasoned wicketkeeper-batter is set to participate in the Sheffield Shield final for Tasmania. Scheduled from March 21 to 25, the Sheffield Shield final overlaps with the commencement of the IPL season, causing Wade’s absence in Titans’ first two matches.

The IPL 2024 is set to kick off on March 22, and Titans will face Mumbai Indians on March 25, followed by a match against Chennai Super Kings on March 27. Unfortunately for Gujarat Titans, Wade will not be available for these initial encounters. However, there is optimism that the left-hander might return to the squad for the third IPL match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 31.

Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan shared insights into Wade’s commitment to the Sheffield Shield final and the understanding with the IPL franchise. “He’s spoken with his IPL franchise, and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game,” explained Vaughan, emphasizing the value of Wade’s contribution to Tasmania’s cricket.

Despite the initial setback, the Titans are hopeful of Wade’s return, acknowledging the wealth of experience and performance he brings to the team. Wade played a crucial role in Gujarat Titans’ title-winning campaign in IPL 2022, featuring in 10 matches and scoring 157 runs at an impressive strike rate of 113.

While Wade faced non-selection in the previous IPL edition, with Wriddhiman Saha preferred for the role of wicketkeeper-batter, the anticipation is high for his potential impact in the upcoming season.

In other IPL-related news, veteran cricketer Dinesh Karthik is set to bid farewell to his IPL career after the 2024 edition, with a decision on his international retirement looming.
