The low-lying areas of Santacruz and Milan subway in Mumbai are known to face severe water accumulation, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience for residents. In response, the Chief Minister directed the Municipal Corporation administration to activate the system designed to manage water accumulation and prevent traffic disruptions.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister was accompanied by several key officials, including Additional Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation (Projects) P Velrasu, Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructural Facilities) Ulhas Mahale, Chief Engineer (Rainwater Drain Lines, Sewerage) Raju Jahagirdar, and Deputy Chief Engineer Vibhas Achrekar. The presence of these responsible officers underscored the importance attached to resolving the water accumulation issue.
Pumping and Storage of Rainwater
Recognizing the hardships faced by citizens due to water accumulation in the Milan subway area during the monsoon season, Chief Minister Shinde emphasized the need for effective solutions. To address this, large water tanks with a capacity of thousands of liters have been installed to pump out rainwater and store it. This proactive measure has contributed to the smooth functioning of the traffic system in the area.
Expanding the System and Ensuring Citizen Welfare
Building upon the success of the water management system implemented in Milan subway, Chief Minister Shinde directed the administration to replicate this system in other areas of Mumbai facing similar challenges. The goal is to ensure the continuous flow of traffic and minimize inconvenience to residents during the monsoon season. The Chief Minister highlighted the role of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s War Room in monitoring rainfall patterns and urged the administration to take all necessary precautions to mitigate any potential problems faced by the public.
