Toll Collection 2.0: Navigating the Future with GPS-Based Tolling

In a significant move to streamline toll collection on National Highways, the Indian government is gearing up to introduce a GPS-based tolling system, ultimately phasing out traditional toll plazas. The initial implementation of this system will take place on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48) and Bengaluru-Mysore Expressway, marking a pivotal shift in the way commuters are charged for using these routes.

The key feature of the GPS Toll System is its focus on distance-based tolling. Instead of toll charges being fixed at specific toll plazas, travelers will now pay tolls based on the actual distance covered on the highway. This innovation aims to bring about a fair and precise tolling mechanism, eliminating the need for toll plazas along these highways.

The groundwork for the GPS Toll System has already commenced, with geofencing being implemented for accurate distance calculations and toll collection. Over 18 lakh commercial vehicles have been equipped with GPS-based vehicle location tracking systems, paving the way for a seamless transition to the new tolling method.

The government plans to expand the GPS Toll System gradually across the country, with trials on different sections of highways. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has informed Parliament that the objective is to make the National Highway network toll plaza-free by March, ushering in a more efficient and hassle-free toll collection process.

Acknowledging potential privacy concerns associated with the GPS-based system, Union Road Transport Secretary Anurag Jain reassured the public that user privacy would be a top priority during implementation. Plans are in place to address privacy issues comprehensively, ensuring the system’s smooth operation.

Looking ahead, the completion of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway by December is anticipated, with the GPS Toll System set to be fully operational on the Delhi-Surat portion by April. These developments underscore the government’s commitment to modernizing toll collection, providing a more convenient and user-friendly experience for highway commuters.
