Revolutionizing Toll Payment: India to Introduce Barrierless System

New Delhi: In a bid to make toll payment hassle-free and quicker, the government is all set to introduce a barrierless tolling system. Commuters may soon bid adieu to long waits at toll booths as trials for the new system are currently underway. According to Minister of State (MoS) for Road Transport and Highways, V K Singh, once the trials are successful, the barrierless tolling system will be rolled out.

In addition to the barrierless system, the government is also planning to implement a payment system based on the distance traveled. At a recent press conference, the minister highlighted that the new tolling system will not only improve efficiency but also reduce travel time for commuters.

The use of FASTags has already proven beneficial in reducing waiting time at toll plazas to just 47 seconds. However, the government aims to further minimize this time to less than 30 seconds. To achieve this, the pilot program is currently being tested at the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The pilot involves the use of satellite-based and camera-based technologies to ensure a smooth tolling process.

Under the new system, as commuters enter a highway, their vehicle data will be collated, and they will be charged based on the number of kilometers traveled. This approach is in contrast to the current practice, where toll charges are fixed and independent of the actual distance traveled. The upcoming barrierless tolling system promises to bring greater convenience and efficiency to the country’s roadways, making travel a seamless experience for all.
