NHRC Issues Notices Over Viral Video: Female Student Dragged by Police at PJTSAU Protest

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana following a viral video depicting a female student allegedly being dragged by her hair during a protest at Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU). The incident occurred on January 24, prompting the NHRC to take suo motu cognizance and demand a comprehensive report within four weeks.

The video, widely circulated on social media, portrays female police officers dragging a student by her hair during an agitation by PJTSAU students in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district. The NHRC’s intervention underscores the need for an in-depth investigation into the alleged use of force against the student.

In response to the incident, BRS party MLC Kavitha Kalvakuntla expressed deep concern, deeming the police’s actions as unacceptable. She called for an unconditional apology from the Telangana Police and urged the Human Rights Commission to take swift and strict action against those involved.

The student protest was centered around the State government’s decision to allocate 100 acres of university land for the construction of a new High Court complex. The video captured the distressing sight of a student being pulled and dragged by two female Cyberabad police constables on a scooter. Following the incident, the Cyberabad Police Commissioner suspended the two constables involved.
