Malaysia Airlines Charts Ambitious Expansion Plans in India, Eyes Deep Codeshare Pact with Local Carrier

Malaysia Airlines is set to embark on a robust expansion strategy in the vibrant Indian aviation market, planning a profound codeshare partnership with an Indian carrier and extending its operations to the north-eastern and southern regions of the country. Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, expressed the airline’s bullish stance on India, considering it a crucial market for their success and an integral part of India’s aviation growth story.

The airline currently operates 69 weekly flights connecting nine Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, and Thiruvananthapuram. In a recent interview, Ismail highlighted Malaysia Airlines’ commitment to India, with the carrier surpassing pre-pandemic operational levels and increasing its frequency on the Amritsar-Kuala Lumpur route.

While already having an interline partnership with Vistara, Malaysia Airlines is in the final stages of negotiations for a deep codeshare with another Indian airline. Although specific details were not disclosed, this move signifies the airline’s dedication to seamless travel experiences for passengers and strengthening ties with Indian carriers.

Looking ahead, Malaysia Airlines envisions expanding its footprint in India over the next two to three years, targeting north-eastern destinations such as Guwahati and Kolkata, and southern regions like Trichy, Vizag, and Goa. These plans are contingent on the delivery of new Boeing 737-8s and Airbus 330 neos, contributing to the carrier’s fleet expansion from 100 to 170 planes by 2030.

Captain Izham Ismail emphasized the importance of upgrading services using wide-body aircraft and maintaining a strong Customer Value Proposition (CVP). While acknowledging the fierce competition in India’s aviation market, Malaysia Airlines aims to grow its market share, already commanding 25% in Malaysia and South East Asia.

The strategic vision for Malaysia Airlines includes becoming one of the top 10 global airlines and one of the top 5 in the Asia Pacific region. With a focus on enhancing products, cabin comfort, and in-flight dining, the airline strives to deliver a superior customer experience in the diverse and rapidly expanding Indian aviation landscape.
