Karnataka Temporarily Halts Forest Trekking to Address Ecological Concerns

In response to growing ecological concerns, Karnataka’s environment minister, Eshwar Khandre, has announced a temporary ban on forest trekking activities, excluding online-bookable routes, effective from February 1. The decision follows an incident where approximately 4,000 trekkers were observed in the ecologically sensitive Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, prompting the need for measures to protect the environment.

Minister Khandre emphasized the importance of regulating trekking activities to safeguard ecosystems and prevent issues such as pollution, plastic waste, and disturbance to wildlife. The temporary ban will remain in place until standard operating procedures are established to ensure responsible trekking practices.

The recent overcrowding incident prompted the minister to direct the forest department to implement measures preventing unregulated access to ecologically fragile areas. Khandre stressed the need for balancing trekkers’ passion with environmental conservation, highlighting the potential adverse impact of uncontrolled entry on sensitive ecosystems. The ban aims to restore order in these areas and mitigate the environmental consequences of unregulated trekking.

Furthermore, the state government had previously imposed a trekking ban from March to September due to concerns related to forest fires and the monsoon season.

The decision to temporarily halt trekking activities underscores the government’s commitment to preserving the natural environment and maintaining the ecological balance in forested areas.
