Expanding Access to Affordable Medicines: Government Aims to Increase ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendra’ Count to 25,000

PM Modi Visit Pune

In a significant move aimed at providing accessible and affordable healthcare to the citizens of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government is actively working to expand the number of ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendras’ from the current 10,000 to a total of 25,000. The announcement came during his address to the nation on the 77th Independence Day, delivered from the historic Red Fort.

The ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendras’ have already made a considerable impact by empowering people, particularly the middle class, with cost-effective medical solutions. These centers play a crucial role in making generic medicines available at affordable prices to the masses, significantly reducing the financial burden on individuals, especially those with chronic illnesses.

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the substantial cost differences between generic and brand-name medicines. He emphasized that individuals facing conditions like diabetes, which often incur monthly expenses of around Rs 3,000, can now access the same medications at Jan Aushadhi Kendras for a mere Rs 10 to Rs 15. This stark reduction in the cost of medications demonstrates the commitment of the government to ensure that essential healthcare remains within reach for all segments of society.

The Jan Aushadhi Kendras initiative aligns with the broader goal of holistic healthcare, which became increasingly relevant in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. As global supply chains faltered, India demonstrated its resilience by advocating a human-centric approach to ensure the well-being of its citizens and the world at large. Prime Minister Modi pointed out that the pandemic underscored the need for holistic healthcare solutions that address the well-being of humans, animals, and plants collectively in the face of diseases.

To further bolster the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and promote traditional health practices, the government established a separate department dedicated to Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy). This strategic move has not only strengthened India’s position in the global healthcare landscape but also garnered international recognition for its efforts in promoting Ayush and Yoga.

As India continues to navigate the post-Covid era, the country’s commitment to global health and its advocacy for a unified approach to health and well-being are gaining global attention. Prime Minister Modi aptly characterized India as the “Vishwa Mitra” or friend of the world, highlighting the nation’s role in advancing the cause of ‘One Earth One Health’ and underscoring its dedication to building a healthier and more resilient world for all.
