Degrees of Success: More Than 76% UPSC Winners Hold Bachelor’s Degrees

In a significant revelation, government data has shown that engineers have emerged as the dominant group among successful candidates in the All-India Civil Services examination, constituting an impressive 64% from 2017 to 2021. The information, disclosed in a written response to BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi by Union junior minister for personnel, Jitendra Singh, highlights a notable shift as engineers diversify into fields such as political science, international relations, and sociology.

The data, presented in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, indicates that the proportion of women in the civil service has exhibited a fluctuating trend, ranging between 24% and 28% from 2017 to 2021.

During the specified period, 76% of the 4,371 candidates recommended for All India Civil Services hailed from the science stream, encompassing engineering, sciences, and medicine. In contrast, only 23.6% belonged to the humanities stream, despite Minister Jitendra Singh noting humanities subjects as the most preferred optional choices. Notably, over 650 successful candidates selected political science and international relations as their optional subjects, followed by 577 candidates opting for sociology and 514 candidates choosing geography.

It is noteworthy that more than 76% of the successful candidates in the civil service possess bachelor’s degrees, as per a related statistic.
