The Dawn of a New Era: Maharashtra and Goa State SET Exam Goes Digital

In a major stride towards modernization, the State Eligibility Test (SET) in Maharashtra and Goa, akin to the National Eligibility Test (NET), is set to undergo a significant transformation. The decision, influenced by recommendations from the University Grants Commission (UGC) sponsored steering committee, heralds plans for biannual SET exams and a shift from the traditional offline mode to a digital platform, marking a departure from the conventional approach.

The impending SET exam organized by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will maintain the offline format, serving as the final chapter in an era of paper-based exams. Subsequent SET exams are poised to transition into the online realm, aligning with the UGC steering committee’s vision of embracing digital efficiency and accessibility in education.

While the schedule for the last offline SET will be unveiled in the coming week, students will have around a month to complete exam application forms. The subsequent two to three months will be dedicated to processing examination applications, generating admit cards, and other associated tasks. The final offline SET is anticipated to occur in March or April of the upcoming year.

Mindful of the challenges posed by online recruitment exams, the university is proceeding cautiously with the implementation of the online SET. Critical factors, including physical inspections of examination centers, internet bandwidth, and other facilities, will influence the decision to shift to an online format. The primary objective is to ensure a smooth experience for all students, with particular attention to those in rural and remote areas, while minimizing any potential disruptions during the exam.

Upon successful implementation of the online SET, the plan is to conduct the exam biannually. This strategic approach aims to deliver quicker results and increased opportunities for students to participate in the SET, aligning with the broader goal of enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of the examination process.

Dr. Parag Kalkar, Pro-Chancellor of SPPU, affirms, “Online SET exams will be considered only after the actual test. We plan to hold the exam twice a year for quick results and opportunities for students.”
