Maratha Reservation Update: Manoj Jarange Threatens Hunger Strike Over Legislative Delay

In a recent development, Manoj Jarange has issued a stern ultimatum to the Maharashtra state government, demanding the enactment of a law allowing the Maratha community to access reservation benefits under the OBC quota. Jarange, a prominent figure advocating for Maratha rights, has threatened to commence another indefinite hunger strike from February 10, 2024, if the government fails to convert the draft notification into an actionable law.

Background and Demands: Jarange expressed frustration with the state government’s divergent opinions regarding the Maratha reservation. He highlighted the inclusion of the “Sage Soyare” clause in the draft notification, facilitating Marathas to obtain the Kunbi certificate for reservation benefits. However, conflicting statements from different ministers have created uncertainty about the government’s commitment to implementing the announcement and relocating the Maratha reservation center.

Jarange emphasized the urgency of the government’s response, referring to the 15-day extension granted on January 25, the last day of the agitation. The demand for a special assembly session to convert the draft into law remains a critical aspect of Jarange’s ultimatum.

Call for Action and Application Process: Jarange urged Maratha community members to initiate the application process for Kunbi certificates, crucial for availing reservation benefits. Expressing concern over delays in certificate issuance in various locations across the state, he stressed the government’s responsibility to promptly issue Kunbi certificates if it is genuinely committed to providing reservation benefits to Marathas.

The deadline set by Jarange is February 10, and the threat of another hunger strike adds tension to the ongoing debate over Maratha reservation rights.
