In the wake of reports alleging the presence of “fake cheese” in a McDonald’s burger in Maharashtra, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) is vehemently calling for a nationwide ban on the operations of the American fast food giant. CAIT has formally approached the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, urging immediate intervention to address concerns about the safety and quality of the food served by McDonald’s.
Founder of CAIT, Praveen Khandelwal, emphasized the severity of the issue, stating, “It should be banned across the country. Fake raw material used at Ahmednagar must be used at all locations. Such MNCs treat India as a market and are least bothered for the health and purity of the food served.” Khandelwal further urged the Secretary of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Rohit Kumar Singh, to take swift action.
In a statement released by CAIT, the traders’ body urgently called upon Rohit Kumar Singh and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take immediate action to ban McDonald’s operations nationwide. CAIT expressed concern that similar fake raw materials could be used in other locations, posing a potential risk to public health.
Responding to the allegations, McDonald’s India took to social media, stating, “Here’s a fact check for you: We use only real, quality cheese in all our products containing cheese. Our commitment to transparency in our ingredients and dedication to providing delicious, high-quality meals to our customers remains unwavering.”
The controversy surrounding the alleged use of fake cheese has sparked a fierce debate between the traders’ body and McDonald’s India, with consumers anxiously awaiting the outcome of the government’s response.
