Mumbai Enforces Plastic Bag Ban: BMC Imposes Fines Up to Rs 25,000

Mumbai: In a significant move for environmental preservation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented a comprehensive ban on the use of plastic bags across the entire city.

The BMC’s decision to prohibit plastic bag usage is rooted in the imperative to safeguard and conserve the environment. To ensure strict compliance with this directive, robust measures are in place. Individuals such as shopkeepers, vegetable vendors, hawkers, and malls are included in the enforcement ambit of this initiative.

Stringent action will be taken against those found in violation of the plastic bag ban. A hefty fine of Rs 5,000 will be levied on first-time offenders upon the discovery of plastic bags in their possession. For subsequent infractions, the fines escalate to Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. In the event that customers or citizens are discovered with plastic bags, authorities will work to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of plastic on the environment. Penalties will also be imposed as deemed necessary.

It is noteworthy that the BMC had previously taken resolute measures against plastic bag usage in Mumbai. However, due to the exigencies of the Covid-19 pandemic, these efforts experienced a temporary lull. With the situation improving, the BMC has resumed its proactive stance against plastic bags, demonstrating its renewed commitment to curbing their usage for the betterment of the environment.
