Maharashtra Sizzles as 15 Locations Surpass 40°C Mark Amidst Rising Temperatures

Pune Records Sweltering Heat Due to Heat Advection, IMD Predicts Relief with Light Rainfall

In a concerning turn of events, Maharashtra is experiencing a significant heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in multiple locations across the state. The scorching heat, well beyond the seasonal norms, has raised alarm bells among residents and authorities alike.

According to reports, at least 15 locations in Maharashtra registered maximum temperatures exceeding the 40°C mark on Thursday, indicative of the severity of the heatwave gripping the region. Pune, a major city in the state, witnessed particularly high temperatures, attributing the heat surge to heat advection from northwest India.

An official from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) shed light on the factors exacerbating the heatwave, stating, “The intense heat is primarily due to heat advection via winds originating from hotter regions of northwest India, such as Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat. Additionally, an anti-cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra and adjoining areas has further intensified the heat.”

Despite the prevailing heatwave, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The IMD official provided a ray of optimism, mentioning, “The day temperature is expected to gradually decrease in certain parts of Maharashtra after April 5, as light rainfall and clouding are forecasted.”

Adding to the meteorological insights, a recent update from Skymet Weather Services highlighted the likelihood of a further temperature rise across various regions, including Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal. The forecast also anticipates pre-monsoon activity, with widespread conditions expected over central, eastern, and southern parts of the country from April 8 onwards, extending for the next 4-5 days.

As Maharashtra grapples with the sweltering heatwave, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of high temperatures and stay hydrated. Additionally, authorities are advised to remain vigilant and implement measures to safeguard vulnerable populations during this period of extreme weather conditions.
