Maharashtra Aims Sky-High: CM Shinde Propels Expansion of Helipads and Air Ambulance Services

In a significant move to bolster emergency response capabilities within the state, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has initiated plans for the expansion of helipads and the introduction of air ambulance services across Maharashtra. This proactive decision is aimed at ensuring rapid and efficient emergency medical services for the people of the state.

The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) has been appointed as the nodal agency responsible for the construction of these helipads and the establishment of air ambulance facilities wherever they are required. This critical decision was reached during the 85th Board of Directors meeting held at the Chief Minister’s official residence.

One of the key priorities of this initiative is to provide air ambulance facilities in vital areas, such as the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway and Mumbai-Pune Expressway. These air ambulances will play a crucial role in responding to emergencies and accidents, ensuring that medical assistance reaches those in need promptly.

Chairing the MADC, Chief Minister Shinde stressed the importance of equipping the state’s airports and runways with night-landing capabilities. He also conducted a comprehensive review of ongoing airport development projects, including those in Shirdi, Amravati, and Karad.

Currently, the directorate of civil aviation holds the authority to construct helipads. However, to streamline construction at the taluka (administrative division) level, this authority will now be delegated to the MADC. Additionally, the resolution includes plans for the establishment of helipads in the vicinity of every police colony, with the intention of utilizing these grounds for police training exercises.

Furthermore, a proposal with an approved budget of Rs 527 crore has been put forth for the construction of a new terminal in Shirdi, coupled with a Rs 62 crore renovation plan for the existing runway. An ambitious project to establish the country’s largest air training center, in collaboration with Tata Group’s Air Vistara, at Belora airport in Amravati is also on the horizon.

The state government has also taken steps to reclaim five MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) airports that were previously outsourced to private companies. Legal actions will be pursued if necessary. Among these airports, Dharashiv and Yavatmal airports are currently non-operational, necessitating immediate attention and revitalization.

This comprehensive effort by the Maharashtra government underlines its commitment to enhancing emergency response infrastructure and ensuring the well-being of its citizens in times of need
