Connecting the Dots: How to Link Apple Notes in macOS Sonoma

Apple’s macOS Sonoma introduces a feature many longed for in Apple Notes – the ability to link two or more notes together. This enables users to create a content list of related notes, streamlining organization and accessibility. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to achieve this in the latest macOS.

Unleashing Apple Notes’ Full Potential

Despite Apple’s progression from the playful Marker Felt font days to the robust note-taking application we know today, there was always a missing piece in the puzzle – the ability to link one note to another. While third-party applications like Hookmark in Setapp offered this functionality, Apple’s newest system introduces a simpler yet effective solution.

This feature can significantly enhance your note-taking experience, especially when you have a multitude of notes that are interrelated. Instead of relying solely on folders, you can now link relevant notes together. For example, you could create a packing list in one Apple Note and link it to another note where you’ve listed items that require charging before your trip.

For teams that collaborate on shared notes, this feature can be a game-changer. You can maintain a central note that everyone accesses, while adding links to notes relevant to specific departments, such as HR or Marketing.

Creating Apple Notes Links in macOS Sonoma

Using the new Apple Notes links is a straightforward process:

  1. Open a new note or select an existing one.
  2. Right-click within the note and choose “Add Link.”
  3. In the dialog box that appears, start typing the name of an existing note.
  4. Optionally, give the link a custom name, or use the title of the linked note as the name.
  5. Click “OK.”

Upon completing these steps, a link is created within the current note. This link is displayed in the characteristic yellow and underlined format, showcasing either the title of the linked note or the custom text you specified.

Clicking on the link seamlessly takes you to the specified linked note, which opens within the same window. It’s essential to note that this feature does not allow you to have multiple related notes open simultaneously. To achieve that, you would still need to navigate to the Window menu in Apple Notes and select “Open Note in New Window.”

As you begin typing the title of the note you wish to link, Notes will assist in finding the matching note. This feature can be particularly handy when you have an extensive collection of notes to sort through and connect.

Cross-Version Compatibility

It’s important to highlight that if you’re working with Notes across various versions of macOS, the linking feature will only be visible in macOS Sonoma.

In essence, the ability to link Apple Notes in macOS Sonoma is a welcome addition, enhancing the platform’s organizational capabilities and streamlining access to related content, whether for personal use or team collaboration.
